Muslim-Friendly Night Markets

08/03/2019

Night markets are known to be the best part of Taipei. But as I went to popular ones like Shilin Night Market & Ningxia Night Market I realise that this isn't true for muslims unless you already don't plan on eating except for maybe one snack or just want to play the many games/claw machines.

素

This means 'vegetarian' in mandarin. Showing this to vendors has been a great help as they are honest enough to admit that their food contains pork, lard or handling of the sort.

Tonghua Night Market

Línjiāng jiē yèshì (tōnghuà yèshì) / 臨江街夜市 (通化夜市)

Address: 106台北市大安區臨江街40巷1弄

Nearest MRT: Xinyi Anhe station exit 4, 5 mins walk

Open: 6pm-12am daily

Some of the halal options here are the fried sweet potato balls which I love love love and the fried squid. The vendor for the fried squid was very nice.

Gongguan Night Market

facing Fried Chicken Master.

The most muslim-friendly night market by far, taking into consideration that I didn't have the chance to go to Raohe Night Market. They have Yong Tau Fu, Assorted Fried Mushrooms (vendor very cute), Sweet Potato Balls (the best), Vegetarian Burgers & Sandwiches as well as Peanut Pancakes.

Assorted Fried Mushrooms

A big palm-sized bowl

NT$100

SGD$4.50

Peanut Pancakes

per quart

NT$30

SGD$1.35

Ningxia Night Market

Address: ·103台北市大同區寧夏路

Nearest MRT: Shuanglian exit 1, 6-8mins walk

Open; 5pm-1am daily

There was only one store worth mentioning in the entire area. Locals and tourists both form the long queue for this roasted mushroom booth which is located right at the front of the night market stretch. It sells King Oyster Mushrooms grilled with sauce topped with your choice of seasoning for only NT$100 (SGD$4.39). I highly reccommend the cumin one!

Shilin Night Market

Address: 111台北市士林區基河路101號

Nearest MRT; Jiantan exit 1

Open: 3pm-1am

There are two ends of the night market. One is the sheltered one in the first photo where they have games, bags and souvenirs. The other is not sheltered and sells food, clothes, shoes and more. We were only able to buy Fried Milk which tastes like crispy milk powder with a beancurd texture inside and some Butterfly Bread here.
